Urban Combustion: Engineering the Smokeless Charcoal BBQ Grill for the Modern Interior

The Smokeless Charcoal BBQ Grill is the most technically ambitious project in the Weekend Works portfolio. In collaboration with the designer Jeong Kim, the goal was to solve a perennial problem for urban dwellers: the desire for authentic, fire-based charcoal flavor without the requirement of a massive outdoor space or an industrial-grade ventilation system. This required a deep dive into the thermodynamics of wood-lump combustion and the fluid dynamics of smoke suppression.

Overcoming the Constraints of Indoor Grilling

Traditional charcoal grilling produces smoke because of two factors: incomplete combustion of the fuel and the "flare-ups" caused by rendered fat dripping directly onto hot coals. Our engineering team approached this as a structural airflow problem.

  • Integrated Silent Fan System: The grill features a proprietary, battery-powered fan system located in the base. This fan creates a pressurized "air curtain" around the central charcoal canister. By forcing a constant stream of oxygen into the heart of the fire, we achieve a near-perfect combustion rate, which almost entirely eliminates the production of smoke during the burn.

  • Tiered Grate Engineering: We designed a tiered stainless-steel grate system that channels oils and fats away from the heat source and into a water-cooled collection tray. This prevents the "flash-burning" of grease, which is the primary cause of indoor odors and pollutants.

  • Thermal Isolation and Tabletop Safety: Utilizing a double-walled "Cool-Touch" construction, the exterior of the grill remains safe to the touch throughout the cooking process. This allows the unit to be placed safely on wood or marble tabletops, effectively turning the dining table into a communal, interactive hearth.

Featured on Homecrux, this grill represents a breakthrough in bringing traditional charcoal cooking into modern, high-density living spaces. It is not just a kitchen appliance; it is a piece of environmental engineering that respects the "ritual of the flame" while adhering to the strict constraints of the contemporary home. It is "material honesty" in action.
